Myth #1

The first myth is a very common misconception that most people share. This being that drapery should be hung on the window trim. Hanging it there gives the illusion of short, squatty windows, and is generally unattractive. It also blocks out a lot of natural light. For the best aesthetic appeal, hang your drapes one or two inches from the ceiling. The inner edge of your drapes should fall on the outer edge of the window. Not only does this allow more light to shine in, but it also gives your window the illusion of being higher, and wider.

Myth #2

The second myth is that window treatments will make your home too dark. Window treatments are designed to afford you privacy and the ability to control light, they don’t have to block it out completely. Window coverings are available in a range of opacities from sheer to blackout, and each serves its own purpose. Blackout curtains are great for bedrooms but can still be open when light is desired. For living areas, try a sheer shade. These window treatments gently diffuse incoming light while still providing daytime privacy.

Myth #3

A third misconception is that you cannot have window treatments if you want minimalist decor. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You simply need the right window treatments for your desired aesthetic. Roman shades and shutters fit the bill perfectly. Both have clean lines and can blend right into your existing decor.

Myth #4

Another very common myth is that window treatments will obstruct your view of the outdoors. If you have large windows or a sunroom that you use to enjoy the view, think of window treatments as a complement to the window. You can use solar or sheer shades with the top-down/bottom-up design to enjoy light during the day, and privacy at night.

Myth #5

Many people believe all window treatments are the same. Years ago, the choices were indeed very limited. Today, you can get different types of window treatments for different needs. You can select blackout shades for your bedroom to get a great night of sleep. Living and sitting rooms look great with sheer window shadings, and formal dining rooms are a wonderful place for Roman shades. Traditional curtains or drapery are always a wise choice for any room, as well.
